Your Shopify store’s hello@ in Gmail

The store runs on Shopify and you want hello@yourstore.com (and support@, orders@...) to land in Gmail. The way depends on where the domain was bought.

First: Shopify may already do it

If the domain was bought through Shopify, it offers free email forwarding in Settings › Domains › domain › Email forwarding: unlimited addresses, each with one destination. It does not send: replies go out from your personal Gmail. For a domain from another registrar connected to the store, that forwarding is not available.

mxproxy makes sense when you need more: several destinations per address (the whole team getting support@), replying as hello@yourstore.com through SMTP with DKIM, a log of every message, an adjustable spam filter or a Telegram alert. Use one or the other: the domain’s MX points to a single service.

Domain bought through Shopify

  1. Add the domain to mxproxy. Create the account, add the store’s domain and keep the page with the DNS records open.
  2. Open the DNS in Shopify. In the Shopify admin: Settings › Domains, click the domain and, under DNS settings, click Manage. If Shopify’s forwarding is on, delete its addresses first.
  3. Create the records. Use Add custom record for each record in the table below and confirm. Shopify’s help says not to edit the name field when adding MX and TXT records at the root; for _mxproxy and the DKIM, which have names of their own, if the panel does not let you type the name, contact Shopify support.
  4. Check and create the addresses. Click Verify now in the mxproxy dashboard, then create hello@, support@ and the rest, or turn on the catch-all. Shopify says DNS can take up to 24 hours.
DNS records for mxproxy to receive and send for your domain
Type Name (host) Value Priority
MX @ mx.mxproxy.dev 10
TXT @ v=spf1 include:spf.mxproxy.dev ~all —
TXT mx202610._domainkey
the selector the dashboard shows
v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=…

TXT _mxproxy mxproxy-verify=…

Shopify warns that some domain types bought through it may not allow MX records for email; then only its support can enable them. And do not use Reset DNS settings afterwards: it deletes the custom records.

Domain from another registrar

If you bought the domain at GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare or elsewhere and only connected it to Shopify, the DNS stays there. Create mxproxy’s records in that provider’s panel, without touching the records Shopify asked for the store (the A and the www CNAME). The provider guides are in Guides, for example GoDaddy and Namecheap.

Reply as the store

For customers to see hello@yourstore.com on your reply, create an SMTP credential at mxproxy (from Personal up) and add the address in Gmail under Send mail as: see Reply from your domain. The store’s automatic emails (order confirmations, for example) keep going out through Shopify.

Create the free account, add the domain and copy the records from the dashboard. The free plan covers one domain with a catch-all; replying as the domain comes with the paid plans.
